Dear Friends, I hope you enjoy our new animal song video Oxford the Octopus. As you may know, the octopus can be a very clever animal, and clever is what Oxford is! Have fun watching him change colors and disguises, as well as appear in the unlikeliest of places throughout this song video. This video also contains most of the song lyrics so that you can read or sing along to Oxford the Octopus. As I wrote in my previous blog post, the octopus is widely regarded as the world's smartest invertebrate. In fact, the intelligence of the octopus and its ability to change color and shape inspired the verses in Oxford the Octopus (from our CD IF I WERE A FISH and Other Ocean Songs for Kids by Birdsong and the Eco-Wonders). The Giant Pacific Octopus is the specific species after which I modeled my character OXFORD THE OCTOPUS. Until I did my research on the Giant Pacific Octopus, I did not know that octopuses can have emotions and often change colors according to what they are feeling. Pretty smart, indeed! (Giant Pacific Octopus photo source and credit found on bing.com.) This kids music video will help you learn more about octopus intelligence and behavior. You can also learn about how baby octopuses are hatched in a previous blog post video. Want to know how you can help to keep the ocean clean for the octopuses and other sea animals? OXFORD THE OCTOPUS has a few suggestions on our website! Enjoy!

Dear Friends, I hope you enjoy this animal song video from the Bat Conservation International YouTube channel. It's called Echolocation-Awesome Music Video. I found it while I was researching bats for a song I am writing about them. I have always been fascinated by bats and find them to be interesting animals for many reasons. These reasons include the fact that about 70% of bats eat insects and use echolocation to find their way and their prey in the night. You can learn more about echolocation and how bats use it on Animal Planet's Animal Facts about echolocation. There are other animals, like the bat, that use echolocation. Do you know what animals these are? One of them is featured in my fun animal song YouTube video Clickety-Clack. Clickety Clack can also be found on our CD IF I WERE A FISH and Other Ocean Songs for Kids by Birdsong and the Eco-Wonders. I hope these videos inspire you to learn more about echolocation and the amazing animals that use it. Enjoy! you can help to keep the ocean clean for the octopuses and other sea animals? Dear Friends, We performed our kids song I ALMOST KISSED A BUTTERFLY many, many times before we finally released it on our new CD EVERYTHING IS CONNECTED and Other Animal Songs for Kids by Birdsong and the Eco-Wonders. I am grateful to all our fans for singing this butterfly song with us during our concerts. This video contains footage from one of those live performances of I ALMOST KISSED A BUTTERFLY. Only parts of the song were recorded that day, so the soundtrack from our new CD is also mixed into this music video. I was especially excited to add the complete song lyrics to this video, so that you can sing-along and read the words to this fun kids' song about caterpillars and butterflies. Perhaps the lyrics to our butterfly song will help you learn to recognize and spell some new words. Before I wrote I ALMOST KISSED A BUTTERFLY, I did not know the correct spelling for the words proboscis and metamorphosis. Writing this song not only helped me learn how to spell new words, but it gave me an opportunity to learn more about caterpillars and butterflies. I wrote this song because I wanted to tell a story about butterflies. It is a story about an encounter I had with a butterfly while hiking on a trail in my neighborhood park. I had many feelings when I saw that butterfly on the trail that day, and I am glad to have been able to express them in this song. You can listen to the story of how I wrote I Almost Kissed a Butterfly on my June, 2009 blog post. After you learn more about butterflies, caterpillars and other animals, you might get inspired to write your own butterfly, caterpillar or other animal song for kids! If you do, please let me know. I'd love to hear it!

Watch Dads dance to our Worm Poop Song in this live performance by Birdsong and the Eco-Wonders. This song is included in our new CD,EVERYTHING IS CONNECTED and Other Animal Songs for Kids. This kids video is a live performance of Birdsong and the Eco-Wonders singing Worm Poop Song. We asked some children in the audience to volunteer their dads to help us sing and dance to this song. So in this video you will see the four volunteered dads wiggling like worms and singing along to the worm poop chorus. If worms could laugh I think they would find our tribute to them quite comical! The audience seemed delighted to watch these terrific dads dance, sing along, wiggle like a worm and sing poop. It took everyone just a few seconds to realize that it's okay to say poop...and then off goes the whole audience singing with gusto: POOP! POOP! And how can we not sing it? Worm poop, also known as worm castings, is very important to the health of our plants and ecosystems. Worm Poop Song is included in our new Parents' Choice Approved CD, EVERYTHING IS CONNECTED and Other Animal Songs for Kids.

Published: Friday, May 7, 2010

I asked my friends, the dolphins, what each of us could do to help them survive another million years or two. And the dolphins said: “Keep the ocean clean! That’s the most important thing. Please . . .Pick your trash up off the beach. Recycle 'most everything.. Find out what pollutes the sea. And ask your friends to help keep the ocean clean. After all, the ocean is our home,”

The latest in my collection of animals songs for kids is a song about gray wolves, called Leaders of the Pack. As with all of my animal songs, I like to spend time learning as much as I can about the animal and find something special about them that inspires the theme of the song. In the case of the gray wolves, the two things that most inspired me the most were: 1.) the way the alpha male and alpha female leaders protect thier pack AND 2.) the way the whole pack acts like a family, including taking turns to care for the wolf pups.
