Dear Friends, I was thrilled to hear that a giant pod over over 60 sperm whales visited the ocean waters off the coast of Dana Point, California last week. This exciting event was reported and video-recorded by my friends at Captain Dave's Dolphin and Whale Safari. Watching this video was the next best thing to being there, and it filled my heart with joy and awe. This was a truly fortunate whale sighting! for You can learn more about it on the Captain Dave's Dolphin and Whale Safari website. I have not yet written a song about sperm whales, but this video may inspire me to do so. Here are some things I just learned about the sperm whales on Capt. Dave's website: FUN FACTS ABOUT SPERM WHALES: -Sperm whales can reach lengths of up to 59 feet and weigh up to 45 tons. -They are the largest toothed whale and may have been in Dana Point, CA feeding on giant Humboldt squid. -Pods like those seen in the video are made up of mostly of adult females and sub-adult males. -Female adult sperm whales usually roam away from the main group. -Sperm whales can dive to depths over 3,300 feet, making them the second deepest diving marine mammal after the Cuvier's beaked whale. _ -Sperm whales can hold their breath for over an hour. -They have the largest brain of any known animal on Earth. I look forward to learning more about these beautiful creatures. I look forward to learning more about these beautiful creatures. Although I have not yet wriiten a song about them, I have written an animal song for kids that captures the sense of awe and wonder I feel when I watch this video. My song is called Earth Is Our Home and it is featured on our CD EVERYTHING IS CONNECTED and Other Animal Songs for Kids by Birdsong and the Eco-Wonders. LISTEN TO Earth Is Our Home. Although I did not meet these sperm whales, I was fortunate enough to meet some blue whales on a boat ride with Captain Dave's Dolphin and Whale Safari in summer of 2013. You can see those blue whales on our video Birdsong Sights a Blue Whale tail!

Dear Friends, I hope you enjoy our YouTube video Birdsong Sights a Blue Whale tail!. I was thrilled to finally meet a blue whale off the coast of Dana Point, CA in summer, 2013. I was on a boat ride with Captain Dave's Dolphin and Whale Safari, and we sighted many blue whales, including an adult female and her calf. See how big the baby blue whale is, and watch as the mother blue whale surprises us with her tail! It was wonderful to finally meet the largest creatures on the planet. Learn more about these impressive animals when you listen to my kids' song, So Big! Blue Whale, from our CD IF I WERE A FISH and Other Ocean Songs for Kids by Birdsong and the Eco-Wonders. There are few things I find quite as exciting as meeting an animal I have written about in one of my songs. For instance, in Spring, 2007, I was fortunate enough to meet the gray whales in San Ignacio Lagoon in Baja, Mexico while the mother whales were stil nursing their babies and waiting for them to grow strong enough to make their long migration to Alaska. Mother and baby whales swam right up to our boats as we all greeted them with our words, squeals and an occasional touch. It is by far one of the most memorable experiences of my life. We even sang my song Migration to the whales that we encountered! Then in 2013, I was so very happy to meet several humpback whales that were spending Summer in the cold nutient-rich ocean waters of Alaska. We watched those humpbacks for hours as they breached, spy-hopped and showed as they dived back into the ocean. It was exhilarating to see! Someday soon, I will make a video of the humpbacks and feature another of my whale songs for kids, Humpback Whale Song ! In the meantime, I hope that you enjoy this short video of a mother blue whale tail and her baby. The day I sighted them was a memorable day, indeed! ENJOY!

Dear Friends, I hope you enjoy this interesting animal video How Wolves Change Rivers from Sustainable Man's YouTube channel. I found it fascinating to learn about the positive impact wolves have had on the food chain and ecosytems of Yellowstone National Park. Wolves were reintroduced to the Park in 1995 after being absent for 70 years and some scientists believe they began a natural process called a trophic cascade. I felt such admiration for wolves after watching this video that I sang my song, Leaders of the Pack, several times! As you watch this video, listen for the following words and discover the ways in which these things are connected to each other in Yellowstone National Park: Wolves Deer Vegetation Valleys Gorges Coyotes Rabbits Mice Hawks Fish Rivers Regenerate Forest Aspen Willow Cottonwood Songbirds Badgers Bald Eagles Ravens Fox Weasels Berries Trophic Cascade Beavers Dams Habitats Otters Muscrats Ducks Fish Reptiles Amphibians Bears Migratory Birds After watching this video, I recommend you listen to my kids song about wolves, Leaders of the Pack. Sing along with me as you learn even more about wolves. You can also see great wolf photos in my kids song video from a previous blog post. There you will also find the lyrics to Leaders of the Pack. I've learned alot about wolves since writing leaders of the pack in 2009, and I look forward to learning more.

Watch this awesome video about Octopus Camouflage

Category: Animal Videos

Published: Sunday, November 10, 2013

Dear Friends, I hope you enjoy this exciting YouTube video by Science Friday. It's called Where's the Octopus? and it contains awesome footage of octopus camouflage. Not only does the octopus (and all cephalapods--squid, cuttlefish and octopus) change colors, but it also changes its skin texture and patterns in order to blend in to its surroundings. Camouflage is the octopus' primary protection from its predators. Watch carefully and you will see the octopus: Change into a rock shape, go from camoflauge to a startle defense, ink the marine biologist who startled it, and change colors and textures in seconds. Listen carefully and you will learn more about octopus camoflauge as well as hear marine biologist Roger Hanlon talk about screaming with excitement after he witnessed and filmed the octopus' camouflage behavior. Eureka! Did you know that the octopus is widely regarded as the world's smartest invertebrate? In fact, the intelligence of the octopus and its ability to change color and shape inspired the verses in my kids song Oxford the Octopus (from our CD IF I WERE A FISH and Other Ocean Songs for Kids.) Listen to a sample of OXFORD THE OCTOPUS and read the lyrics to learn more about octopus intelligence and behavior. You can also watch another fun octopus video in my previous blog post.Want to know how you can help to keep the ocean clean for the octopuses and other sea animals?
