 Dear Friends,

I am excited to be writing a new song about ORCAS. Also called "killer whales", orcas are actually a part of the
dolphin family. I began to learn about the orcas from a wonderful guide named Cindy Hansen on a gray whale expedition
with my friends at Baja Discovery. During that trip, Cindy heard my gray whale song, Migration, and suggested that I also
write a kids' song about orcas. Cindy is also a guide for The Whale Museum in Washington state and knows a great
deal about the orcas that live in that area. She began to tell me stories about orca families that live in pods in the Salish Sea,
off the coast of Washington. These pods have been named pods J, K, and L by researchers and are called "Southern Resident
orcas".

As I istened to Cindy and I read all I could about orcas, I began to gain a great respect for these animals. I learned
that they live in family groups  that stay together for their whole lives. Even adult males land females remain with their
mothers throughout their entire lifetimes. Some believe that orca families have some of the strongest bonds in nature.
They travel together, play together and communicate with a language that is different from one pod to the next. Although
orcas live in oceans all over the world, I decided to focus my song on the Southern Resident orcas of the Pacific northwest because these orcas are endangered. You can learn more about these orcas by visiting the website of The Whale Museum.

My upcoming song about the magnificent orcas will be added to my growing collection of animal songs for kids by
BIRDSONG and the ECO-WONDERSYou can hear other songs about blue whales, humpback whales and gray whales
on our CD IF I WERE A FISH and Other Ocean Songs for Kids.  You can also watch some of our animal song videos on
this blog. They include  CLICKETY-CLACK about dolphins, MIGRATION about gray whales and PINNIPED PARADE about
sea lions, seals and walruses.

Stay tuned for more information about orcas as I write my new ocean animal song for kids.
If you have any orca stories or fun facts to share with us, I would love to here from you.

Sincerely,

Birdsong

Dear Friends. Check out this video of a kayaker's amazing encounter with a blue whale, the largest animal on Earth. It gives you a close-up look at just how big and magnificent these creatures are. I felt excited and tingly inside when I watched this. You can learn just how big a blue whale by listening to my song So Big! Blue Whale! on our CD IF I WERE A FISH and other Ocean Songs for Kids by Birdsong and the Eco-Wonders®. I wrote this song as a tribute to the world's largest animal. See if you can if you can find facts about a blue whale's lungs, heart and tongue in the song! (The lyrics to the song are below.)

Dear Friends. This is a fun National Geographic kids' video about dolphins. Here you will see a pod of dolphins using their sounds to locate large schools of anchovies. After locating the fish, they then use dolphin teamwork to catch the anchovies for dinner. Echolation and cooperation are the names of the game in this educational kids video. You can watch more natiuonal geographic videos at National Geographic Kids Online. You can also watch my animal song video about dolphins and echolocation, called Clickety Clack, in a previous blog post. In the video you will find the dolphin photos by NOAA and the lyrics of the song so that you can sing along. Clickety-Clack is the first song on my CD IF I WERE A FISH and other Ocean Songs for Kids by Birdsong and the Eco-Wonders. I love seeing dolphins off the coast of California where I live. I hope you enjoy these dolphin videos. -Birdsong
