Dear Friends,

    I hope you enjoy this video of my new animal song for kids, Orcas! It includes amazing photos of orcas, courtesy of Stefan Jacobs, The Whale Museum and NOAA. As I've mentioned in my earlier blog entries, these beautiful and intelligent marine mammals have very strong family ties that last for a lifetime. In fact, most of them spend their entire lives with their family group and their pod. These family relationships are the main theme of this song. I would love to hear what you think of it.

      Below are the updated lyrics to Orcas! The verses include the names of some of the orcas that reside in the Salish Sea. You can see photos of these orcas on my earlier blog entries, as well as in this video. You can also learn more about these orcas by visiting the website of The Whale Museum.

    VERSE 1:

Rhapsody is the daughter of
Ewok who was the sister of
Oreo who is the mother of
Cookie and his brother Double Stuff
They are quite the distinguished family
Living in a pod in the Salish Sea. 
(Who are they?)

CHORUS:
Orcas, Orcas. Orcas, Orcas.
Sister, brother, cousin and mother
Spend their whole lives with each other.
Orcas, Orcas. Orcas, Orcas.
Sons and daughters, auntie, grandmother   
Know just how to talk to each other.

VERSE 2:

Granny is 98 years old. 
She's the eldest of her pod
and she likes to show  the members
of the younger generation
the ways of orca cooperation.
How to work communicate and work as a team
When they hunt for salmon and they share a meal.

SPOKEN:
"Hey Rhapsody", said Princess Angeline,
"There's a party going on here in the Salish Sea
So shake your dorsal fin and  join the fun.
It's a superpod reunion of everyone."

"Every orca family that lives in this community
Will be taking part in all the fun festivities."
So Rhapsody swam and  Angeline's call
'Til she joined the good time being had by all.

They were breaching, chasing, swimming upside down.
The Salish sea was filled with lively orca sounds.
Everyone so glad to see one another
And to meet each other's new sister or brother. 

"Hey Lea", said Rhapsody, "I remember you,
your sons Lobo and Kelp, and your daughter Yoda, too"
"They're spunky and strong and they like to have fun.
I'm so proud", said Lea, "of my daughter and sons."

Then Granny called out:  "I would be very pleased
if someone found some food for these festivities.
If the people on the land have kept the waters clean, 
There should be plenty of salmon now swimming downstream."

So every pod, each with a language of their own,
made burps and chirps and loud orca calls
to gather their entire family to go hunting
for salmon in the Salish Sea.
Communicating and working as a team,
they hunted  for salmon
and they shared a meal.

Dear Friends. This is a fun National Geographic kids' video about dolphins. Here you will see a pod of dolphins using their sounds to locate large schools of anchovies. After locating the fish, they then use dolphin teamwork to catch the anchovies for dinner. Echolation and cooperation are the names of the game in this educational kids video. You can watch more natiuonal geographic videos at National Geographic Kids Online. You can also watch my animal song video about dolphins and echolocation, called Clickety Clack, in a previous blog post. In the video you will find the dolphin photos by NOAA and the lyrics of the song so that you can sing along.
