More Orca Sounds!

Category: Animal Songs- Ocean

Dear Friends,

Here's another great video of orca sounds. What is amazing is that each pod or clan has a different sounds! Notice the sounds of the resident J, K and L  PODS, who live along the northwestern side of the United States. These are the very orcas that inspired my new animal song-in-progress, Orcas. As I've mentioned in my earlier blog entries, these marine mammals have very strong family ties that last for a lifetime. In fact, most of them spend their entire lives with their family group and their pod.

Below are the revised lyrics my new animal song for kids, Orcas. The verses include the names of some of the orcas that reside in the Salish SeaYou can see photos of the of the orcas who you will hear about in my song in an earlier blog entry. You can also learn more about these orcas by visiting the website of The Whale Museum.

I look forward to singing my new song about the magnificent orcas soon, so stay tuned!  In the meantime, if you have any orca stories or fun facts to share with us, I would love to here from you. CLICK HERE to write to me. Orcas will be added to my growing collection of animal songs for kids by BIRDSONG and the ECO-WONDERSYou can hear other songs about blue whales, humpback whales and gray whales on our CD IF I WERE A FISH and Other Ocean Songs for Kids.  You can also watch some of our animal song videos on this blog. They include  CLICKETY-CLACK about dolphins, MIGRATION about gray whales and PINNIPED PARADE about sea lions, seals and walruses, and KEEP THE OCEAN CLEAN!

Enjoy!

Here are the Lyrics-in-progress to Orcas:

    VERSE 1:

Rhapsody is the daughter of
Ewok who was the sister of
Oreo who is the mother of
Cookie and his brother Double Stuff
They are quite the distinctive family
Living in a pod in the Salish Sea.

(Who are they?)

CHORUS:
Orcas, Orcas. Orcas, Orcas.
Sister, brother, cousin and mother
Spend their whole lives with each other.
Orcas, Orcas. Orcas, Orcas.
Sons and daughters, aunties, grandmother
Know just how to talk to each other.

VERSE 2:

Granny is 98 years old.
She's the eldest of her pod
and she likes to show  the members
of the younger generation
the ways of orca cooperation.
How to work communicate and work as a team
When they hunt for salmon and they share a meal.

to CHORUS

SPOKEN:
"Hey Rhapsody", said Princess Angeline,
"There's a party going on here in the Salish Sea
So shake your dorsal fin and  join the fun.
It's a superpod reunion of everyone."

"Every orca family that lives in this community
Will be taking part in all the fun festivities."
So Rhapsody swam and  Angeline's call
'Til she joined the good time being had by all.

They were breaching, chasing and swimming upside down.
The Salish sea was filled with lively orca sounds.
Every pod had a language of its own
But still they figured out how to all get along.

"Hey Lea", said Rhapsody, "I remember you,
your sons Lobo and Kelp, and your daughter Yoda, too"
"Yes, they are strong and spunky and like to have fun.
I'm so proud", said Lea, "of my daughter and sons."

Then Granny called out:  "I would be very pleased
if the young ones found some food for our festivities.
If the people on the land have kept the waters clean,
There should be plenty of salmon now swimming downstream."

So all three pods, each with a language of their own,
made burps and chirps and loud orca calls
to gather everyone together and work as a team
and they went  hunting  for salmon
and then they shared a meal.

to CHORUS

Dear Friends. Check out this video of a kayaker's amazing encounter with a blue whale, the largest animal on Earth. It gives you a close-up look at just how big and magnificent these creatures are. I felt excited and tingly inside when I watched this. You can learn just how big a blue whale by listening to my song So Big! Blue Whale! on our CD IF I WERE A FISH and other Ocean Songs for Kids by Birdsong and the Eco-Wonders®. I wrote this song as a tribute to the world's largest animal. See if you can if you can find facts about a blue whale's lungs, heart and tongue in the song! (The lyrics to the song are below.)

Dear Friends. This is a fun National Geographic kids' video about dolphins. Here you will see a pod of dolphins using their sounds to locate large schools of anchovies. After locating the fish, they then use dolphin teamwork to catch the anchovies for dinner. Echolation and cooperation are the names of the game in this educational kids video. You can watch more natiuonal geographic videos at National Geographic Kids Online. You can also watch my animal song video about dolphins and echolocation, called Clickety Clack, in a previous blog post.
