CLICK HERE to listen to "PLANT A HABITAT" by Birdsong and the Eco-Wonders

Dear Friends,

While I was writing my kids' song "I Almost Kissed a Butterfly," I learned that plants were very important to birds, butterflies, and many of the creatures with whom we share our neighborhoods. Plants provide food and shelter for our animal friends. In fact, some animals are very particular about the plants they will eat. For example, monarch caterpillars will only eat milkweed.

We can help wild birds, butterflies and other creatures by planting trees, seeds and small plants that these animals like and need in order to live. By planting, we are helping to provide habitats for our animal friends. A habitat is a place where living things can find food, water, shelter and a safe place to raise their young. This knowledge inspired me to write a new animal song for kids named, "Plant a Habitat."  CLICK HERE TO LISTEN.  The lyrics are below. I hope you enjoy it.

What types of plants do the butterflies and birds in your neighborhood enjoy? We would love to hear from you about the kinds of plants and habitats you are planting in your yards and neighborhoods.

Happy Planting,

Birdsong

Lyrics to "PLANT A HABITAT"

CHORUS:

Plant a habitat.  I'm gonna plant a habitat.

The butterflies and bees are whispering please

Plant a space where we can grow and feed. So...

Plant a habitat.  The hummingbirds will be happy for that.

With flowers so bright and nectar so sweet.

And lots of food our nature friends to eat.

All around the world we need some space

Where animals and plants can find a place

With clean water, food and shelter,

A home where they raise their young.

So I'm learning about the ways you and I

Can help all living things to survive

Like planting seeds, flowers and trees

The kind of habitats that we all need.

to CHORUS

My friend Sabrina  grows milkweed.
It's the only plant that the caterpillars of a monarch butterfly will eat.
Reggie and Lori plant native trees
Where the birds can raise their families.

Carlos and his classmates pick up trash from the stream
So the animals can drink water that’s clean.
And Jodi plants flowers that are really great
For the hummingbirds to pollinate.

And how about a habitat for me and you?
A little piece of earth where we can grow some food.
Fruits and vegetables to eat
These are the habitats we all need.

to CHORUS

Interesting Facts and Photos about Sharks

Category: Animal Songs- Ocean

Published: Saturday, June 12, 2010

Whenever I write a new animal song for kids, I try to learn as much about the animal as I can. I first thought about writing a kids' song about sharks after visiting an aquarium and seeing these fascinating creatures up close. I could not fit all the things I learned about sharks into one song, so I have included a list of fun facts about sharks below, as well as some photos. Interesting Facts about the fascinating sharks: -There are about 350 different types of sharks, but researchers think there are other sharks that haven't been discovered yet! -The dwarf shark is as small as your hand, while the whale shark can be as large as a school bus! -A shark is one of the best hunters in the world. Even their little pups go out looking for food. -A shark's hunger can be satisfied with one good meal. The meal can last a long time because a shark uses little energy to swim. Some sharks hold food in their stomachs without it being digested. If they eat a big meal, it can last three or more months!

Listen to our Little Pocket Mouse song-in-progress

Category: Animal Songs

Published: Saturday, April 10, 2010

I’m small and furry, watch me scurry! It's the middle of the night and I'm in a hurry To gather seeds I like to eat. And store those seeds inside my cheeks. I'm a little pocket mouse. And when the sun begins to rise, I find my tunnel and I crawl inside. And there I hide the food I found And rest all day 'til the sun goes down. I'm a little pocket mouse. CHORUS: Pocket mouse, oh where's your house? It's underground where I cannot be found. Oh no, no, no! (no, no) I'm a mouse who likes my privacy, So it came as a surprise to me To learn I was hero in the rodent family! It started in 1972 On a spaceship that went around moon. Of all the animals smart and strong Who did the astronauts take along? It was the Little Pocket Mouse! With lots of food in their big cheek pockets, Five little mice boarded that rocket Didn't know much about outer space, but they were glad to help the human race That little pocket mouse! CHORUS: Pocket mouse, oh where's your house? It's underground where I cannot be found. Oh no, no, no! (no, no) I'm a mouse who likes my privacy, So it came as a surprise to me To learn I was hero in the rodent family!
