Lyrics to HERE WE GO!, our song about baby sea turtles

Category: Animal Songs- Ocean

Dear Friends,

When I heard the story of how baby sea turtles spend the first days of their lives, I knew I wanted to write a song about them to add to my collection of animal songs for kids. I was fascinated by the fact that the first babies to hatch from their eggs would wait for the rest of their brothers and sisters to hatch before running to the sea. By dashing to the ocean in a group, there is a better chance that some of the baby sea turtles will get there without being eaten by their predators. (New sea turtles hatchlings are a favorite food of marine birds and raccoons!)

I learned this interesting fact about sea turtles in a class taught by my friend, Ranger Winter Bonnin, at Crystal Cove State Park in Newport Coast, California. While I was sitting in her class, the words "Here we go. Wish us luck." popped into my head, and I began to write my song.  Of course I named it "Here We Go! "  "Here We Go!" is one of the more lively songs in my collection of animal songs for kids and is on our CD "IF I WERE A FISH and Other Ocean Songs for Kids" by Birdsong and the Eco-Wonders.  My fans love to sing along and echo the words "go" "luck" "hatched" and "eggs". Here are the lyrics, or words, to Here We Go!:

Chorus

Here we go, go, go.
Wish us luck, luck, luck
As we make our way across the sand to the sea.
We've just hatched, hatched, hatched
From our eggs, eggs, eggs.
And the ocean water world is where we need to be.

We are baby sea turtles. We've been growing in our eggs
That our mother laid in a nest in the warm, dry sand.
And now that all of us are hatched it's time to begin
To dash together to the sea to have our first swim.

(to Chorus)

When we scramble to the sea in the middle of the night,
We find our way with the help of the moon and starlight.
It's our first big adventure since we've left our turtle nest.
And we must find a safe place in the sea before we rest.

(to Chorus)

If we are lucky we will grow up in the sea

Eating tiny shrimp, sea jellies and seaweed.

And maybe one day some of us will find our way back

To lay our own eggs on this beach where we were hatched.

     (to Chorus)

You can also watch a fun kids video of  HERE WE GO!  that includes photos of baby and adult sea turtles and performances by Birdsong and the Eco-Wonders in Ambergris Caye, Belize and in Orange County, California. Click here to watch.

If you have ever seen an adult or baby sea turtle, we’d love to hear about it. Who knows? Maybe you will write your own sea turtle song (or add a verse to mine).  In the meantime, good luck sea turtles!

Interesting Facts and Photos about Sharks

Category: Animal Songs- Ocean

Published: Saturday, June 12, 2010

Whenever I write a new animal song for kids, I try to learn as much about the animal as I can. I first thought about writing a kids' song about sharks after visiting an aquarium and seeing these fascinating creatures up close. I could not fit all the things I learned about sharks into one song, so I have included a list of fun facts about sharks below, as well as some photos. Interesting Facts about the fascinating sharks: -There are about 350 different types of sharks, but researchers think there are other sharks that haven't been discovered yet! -The dwarf shark is as small as your hand, while the whale shark can be as large as a school bus! -A shark is one of the best hunters in the world. Even their little pups go out looking for food. -A shark's hunger can be satisfied with one good meal. The meal can last a long time because a shark uses little energy to swim. Some sharks hold food in their stomachs without it being digested. If they eat a big meal, it can last three or more months!

Listen to our Little Pocket Mouse song-in-progress

Category: Animal Songs

Published: Saturday, April 10, 2010

I’m small and furry, watch me scurry! It's the middle of the night and I'm in a hurry To gather seeds I like to eat. And store those seeds inside my cheeks. I'm a little pocket mouse. And when the sun begins to rise, I find my tunnel and I crawl inside. And there I hide the food I found And rest all day 'til the sun goes down. I'm a little pocket mouse. CHORUS: Pocket mouse, oh where's your house? It's underground where I cannot be found. Oh no, no, no! (no, no) I'm a mouse who likes my privacy, So it came as a surprise to me To learn I was hero in the rodent family! It started in 1972 On a spaceship that went around moon. Of all the animals smart and strong Who did the astronauts take along? It was the Little Pocket Mouse! With lots of food in their big cheek pockets, Five little mice boarded that rocket Didn't know much about outer space, but they were glad to help the human race That little pocket mouse! CHORUS: Pocket mouse, oh where's your house? It's underground where I cannot be found. Oh no, no, no! (no, no) I'm a mouse who likes my privacy, So it came as a surprise to me To learn I was hero in the rodent family!
